SATA Backplanes
Posted by John-Erik | Filed under Uncategorized
Backplanes are being launched that allow SASCSI and SATA drives to be used on the same backplane in combination with one another - SCSI for performance and ATA for capacity for lesser used data. There will be tiny sleds that go with it, too, but you could easily buy the backplane and make your own enclosure.
Of course, if you want to make your own completely, I’d fabricate a metal bracket to hold the SATA power and data in place. Then take an old CD-ROM drive and rip out the innards and attach the bracket into it. Then fabricate a metal enclosure with a handle on the front for the disk drive that will slide in and out of the old CD-ROM innards and connect with the SATA power and data cables. All you need then is a faceplate.
