HL2 Server Sizing
Posted by John-Erik | Filed under Gaming
I’ve been recruited (again) to admin some systems for a LAN party. Here’s the question: the intent is to run HL2, Q3A and a few other games, but mostly HL2 in honor of its release. Does anyone have any sizing information for servers? I’m looking at 32 players or more, plus a few other servers on the same machine. Due to the nature of the system I’m running, I’m more concerned about CPU usage than anything else. Also, any information about supported OS’s? E.g., will Linux be supported initially? How about Solaris x86?
The system I’m using will be my desktop most likely (unless the CPU requirements are low enough to get away with something else) and will be lined up as follows: dual PIII-S 1.4, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB 5400 RPM RAID 1, Intel PRO/1000MT desktop NIC, FireGL 1000 Pro video (the video and disks are being swapped out for reliability and availability, sound card and second video card are being removed). Since I’m using different disks the OS is up in the air completely, and I can run Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows Server 2003, RHL, Debian Linux, Solaris 9 x86 or BSD. Any ideas for sizing and/or OS compatibility?
