Databases

Well, using access, you can access any database you want that’s OBDC compliant. The most basic types are using the access files themselves shared over a LAN for multiple users, and then there’s an access web database, where it’s used for web forms but it still a basic access file (this is the Jet database), and then you move into the realm of SQL databases. SQL servers are seperate programs that you usally purchase seperately, such as MySQL, Sybase, Oracle, MS SQL and so on. They scale to alot of users and can use tremendous amounts of processing power if necessary, so they are the most powerful types. So I guess the real question is: what is your intended applications?
Jet is basically an engine whereby multiple people can use and modify the same Access file at the same time. It’s a bit more complex than that, but that’s what you’ll be using it for. It’s already installed on Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro (and NT Wkstn too, in case you were wondering) as well as all server OS’s. Basically, if you have Access on each computer, just share the file over the network and have everybody access it from one machine. Pretty simply, huh? It should work, let me know if that doesn’t do it (if it doesn’t do it, we can get you a free SQL server if you’d like or something else), as there can be some issues with this setup (for one, all systems must be NT, and so on …)
